Here’s what you need to know about the social media ban

In 30 seconds or less, here is what you need to know about the social media ban for under 16s.

⭐ When? 10 December 2025 - right at the start of school holidays

⭐ Which platforms? All your 'traditional' social media, although exemptions will likely be made for messaging and gaming platforms.

⭐ How will it be enforced? Platforms will have to verify age and may use the Digital ID scheme, facial recognition or a combination of options.

⭐ Will there be fines if kids find a loophole? Children, parents and educators will not be fined or punished in any way. Social media platforms will be fined up to $49.5 million if they don't take enough steps to keep under 16s offline.

⁉️ What do I do now? ⁉️

Have a conversation with a young person in your life about the ban. Ask questions like:
💫 What do you know about it already?
💫 What do you think about it?
💫 Why do you think this is happening?
💫 What will be the good parts of it?
💫What will be the negative parts of it?
💫How can we prepare for December?

Regular, open conversations about the ban is the best way to prepare. What will you ask today?
