Young entrepreneurs banned from social media?
🚨 What happens to young entrepreneurs when social media is off-limits?
Australia champions youth entrepreneurship, encouraging young people to start businesses, try new ideas and join thinktanks. But once the social media ban comes into effect, one of their biggest marketing tools will be off limits.
Think kids selling candles at the market but promoting themselves on social media, young people making bank streaming on Twitch and kids who are receiving VC funding with large product based businesses.
Without social media, bootstrapping and organic growth become much harder and their marketing plans will be thrown out the window.
Unfortunately there’s no clear workaround—having a parent or older business partner as an admin on the accounts might help, but under-16s likely won’t be able to post or manage their pages.
I think there should be an exception for young people using social media for business purposes. Maybe the account could be tied to an ABN and would have to be a business page before anyone under 16 could access it. The ban will make it so much harder for young people to start their entrepreneurial journey when we should be encouraging it.
This is a wake-up call for all businesses: diversify your marketing. Build an email list, set up a website, and for young entrepreneurs, explore platforms without age restrictions.
Social media ban workshops are the best way to educate your staff, students and parents about the ban. Book in for a social media ban presentation for your school, organisation or local government.
