Privacy concerns & the social media ban

When I'm talking about the social media ban, people say to me - "upload my drivers license to facebook?! I would never do that!"

Let's talk about the real concern, privacy.

Only 4.4% of adults trust social media platforms to handle their sensitive information.

You don't want to upload your passport or drivers licence to verify your age in case that information gets hacked or misused.

I hear you. And so did the government.

In their new social media ban laws, the government made a law which said that strict privacy and data collection rules will apply, including that platforms must delete the information you've given after they've verified your age, meaning they can't use age verification data for any other purpose unless you expressly agree.

The government also said that if platforms want to use the Digital ID scheme through myGov as a way of verifying users' age, they must also have another option that doesn't involve uploading ID. So you won't be forced to upload your ID if you don't want to.

Would you upload your drivers license to social media platforms to verify your age?

Social media ban workshops are the best way to educate your staff, students and parents about the ban. Book in for a social media ban presentation for your school, organisation or local government.
